On Sunday the 8th of October 3 teams from Ysgol Eirias travelled down to Llangrannog for the annual Welsh Schools Ski Championships.

It was a big entry list with nearly 100 pupils representing 22 schools from across Wales and after years of coming close the boys team of Joe Constantine, Ben Constantine, Alex Davies and Sion Edwards took the title of Welsh Champions.

The girls’ team consisting of Olivia Ward, Caitlin Leece, Natasha Leece and Catrin Wilkinson were runners up in the girl’s competition with all first girls skiing very well, especially Catrin in her first time at the welsh schools championship.

Joe Constantine won the competition overall with Brother Ben taking third place and also winning the prize for the fastest non Welsh squad member.

Olivia Ward won the girls’ competition.  Olivia has represented GB on several occasions and will be heading back out to the Alps soon to continue her training.

The second boys’ team of Jack Parker, Elias Armstrong, Jack Harvey and Tom Harvey also put in strong performances and all three teams qualified for the British Schools Championships which this year takes place at Pontypool in November. There was also a very impressive performance with Jack Evans at his first national ski race, definitely a racer to watch in the future.

The teams would all like to thank their team manager, Miss Kerfoot-Robson for all her hard work and organisation. The 3 teams now hope to have further success in the British Schools Championships.

On Wednesday, July 5th, four of our students took part in the national final of the Spelling Bee Competition, organised in Aberystwyth by Routes into Languages.

Over 5000 pupils entered the competition in Wales and Ysgol Eirias was proudly represented by Freya Winters-Jones and Oscar Percival, both German students from 7B, and our French students Amber Dyke from 7O and Bethany Morgan from 7C.

They thoroughly enjoyed competing with students from other schools and will keep good memories of the day.

One of the many positive aspects of the competition highlighted by our students is that they recognised the usefulness of learning new vocabulary and how they will use their knowledge both in classroom activities and in their homework tasks.

We wish all our students here at Ysgol Eirias a very good summer holiday and continued success for next year as foreign language learners.
