Pupils and staff make a cyber escape

A collaboration between Ysgol Eirias, the North Wales Police and CGI, a global cyber security company has been hailed as a huge success by staff and students.

The CGI Escape Room landed at Eirias for the week, following a stint at the Albert Dock in Liverpool, to challenge students to ‘escape’ from the 40 foot container. A series of complex problems faced the students in an exciting scenario. Over 150 students studying Computer Science and ICT qualifications, faced the challenge.

We are very grateful for the work of Phillipa Proctor and her CGI team and Dewi Owen from the North Wales Police Cyber Crime Team. They ensured that the students involved had a fantastic time, and gave them a real insight into the importance of keeping data safe. It has also encouraged some students to consider cyber security as a future career. I only wish it was here for longer so more of our students could have this wonderful experience.
David Jones, Head of the Business and Communications

It was a big hit with the students, who described it as “great fun and an exciting challenge that needed team communication and lateral thinking”.

It has been a pleasure to welcome students, staff and governors to the Cyber Escape during our visit to Ysgol Eirias. The students have displayed exemplary behaviour and the team has been really impressed with their teamwork and problem solving abilities. I hope this experience has helped to reinforce the importance of cyber security in everyday life. Many thanks to Eirias and our partners North Wales Police.

Dewi Owen of the North Wales Police Cyber Crime Team, reflected on the week:

“Cyber Safety and Security is something that everyone needs to be aware of these days, and we at North Wales Police Cybercrime Team are committed to raising awareness amongst youngsters as technology is such a big part of their lives. We were therefore delighted to have the opportunity to bring CGI Cyber Escapes Interactive Escape Room to Eirias.

I’m sure that there are many Cyber Security Experts of the future amongst them and some of the pupils may have even managed to escape in a quicker time than the Business & Communications staff team did!
Dewi Owen of the North Wales Police Cyber Crime Team

He continued:

"It provided Cyber Security awareness education to pupils in an enjoyable and memorable way. Pupils were challenged to look for clues, solve puzzles and decipher riddles in order to earn their escape, all while learning about potential cyber security risks, how to keep information and assets safe, and how to reduce the impact of a cyber-attack. It was great to see everyone having so much fun while learning how to stay safe and secure online and the pupils from Eirias were excellent throughout the week.

I’m sure that there are many Cyber Security Experts of the future amongst them and some of the pupils may have even managed to escape in a quicker time than the Business & Communications staff team did! North Wales Police Cybercrime Team would like to thank Mr Jones and Eirias for working in partnership with us on this exciting and innovative project and we look forward to continuing to work with Mr Jones and the school in order to ensure that Eirias pupils are safe, secure and resilient when using the internet.”

Well done to all those involved.
