European Day of Languages at Eirias

Here at Ysgol Eirias we always enjoy celebrating European Day of Languages at the beginning of the new school year! It is an ideal opportunity to remind everyone of the many positive benefits of learning languages and to celebrate a wider range of cultures.

This year pupils have been given the opportunity to broaden their horizons by experiencing micro-lessons in different languages to the ones they would perhaps normally study. Ukrainian, Aramaic, Mandarin, German and Spanish echoed around our classrooms during form time as our team of student linguists provided insights into other cultures. We hope these micro-lessons might spark students’ curiosity into finding out more!

There have also been some fun competitions for students and staff to get involved in such as designing a t-shirt to celebrate linguistic diversity, a bake-off challenge with a cultural theme and a raffle for a ‘cultural casket’ to raise money for charity.

On Tuesday, MFL Linguists from Years 12 & 13 took part in the Great European Bake Off 2022.

They had been asked to research & bake a European recipe to bring in for tasting. The entries were absolutely amazing and made choosing a winner a very difficult task for Mrs Sutton & Mrs Blackwell who were invited to judge the competition - our students are not only talented linguists but also fantastic bakers!

The cakes & desserts they made ranged from Italian tiramisu & French madeleines to Maltese pastries & Danish cinnamon buns. The winner was a fantastic show stopping Black Forest Gateau made by Oliver White who was crowned Star Baker.

As always, our fabulous students rose to the challenges and impressed the judges with their creative thinking and cultural understanding. Language-themed prizes were awarded to the well-deserved winners! Thank you to everyone who got involved in the celebrations this year, we hope it has inspired our budding linguists!
