Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
Lwfans Cynhaliaeth Addysg (LCA)

What is EMA?

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is an income-assessed weekly allowance of £30 to help students with the cost of further education.

It is paid every two weeks directly into the student’s bank account. It provides young people, who wish to continue in education after school leaving age, with an incentive to earn awards through good attendance and achieving agreed objectives.

Apply directly to Student Finance Wales. Application forms are available online or in the Sixth Form Resource Base. Applications can be made during the Summer after Year 11 or anytime during Year 12 and 13, however, payments can only be backdated if applications are approved by Student Finance Wales within the first 6 weeks of the school year. Receipt of EMA will not affect any benefits which are currently paid to your household.

See the downloads section below for the EMA contract, the Data Protection Statement and the 2023-2024 Payment Dates.
