Top Tips for GCSE PE

  • Create a Revision Schedule: - Start early and create a revision timetable to organise your study sessions. Allocate more time to topics you're less confident about, but don't forget to review your stronger areas too.
  • Reflection & retrieval: - Remember to revisit topics after you have revised them to help to embed the learning and deepen understanding.
  • Understand the Exam Structure: - Make sure you're familiar with the exam format and the content that will be covered.

* The examination starts with a 30minute audio-visual section where you will be asked questions about performances from a video clip, such as ‘Which components of fitness are the most important for the swimmer?’, then subsequent questions such as ‘What method of training would you use to develop this component?’.

* Following this there is a 90-minute paper where you will be expected to show knowledge for simple 1 or 2 point questions and apply this knowledge to demonstrate understanding for questions worth more marks.

  • Familiarise yourself with command words: - Make sure you understand what is required when the question uses command words like ‘Describe’, ‘Explain’, ‘Analyse’ or ‘Evaluate’ etc. This way, you will be providing the response that is required.
  • The Inter-relationship of the major topic of training and performance - Ensure that you understand how the components of fitness, methods of training, principles of training and methods of testing are all intrinsically linked.
  • Use Past Papers: - Practicing past exam papers is one of the best ways to familiarise yourself with the types of questions you’ll face in the exam. It also helps you develop time management skills so you're not rushed during the actual exam. Pay attention to the answers provided in the mark schemes to understand how answers are graded.
