LGBTQ+ & The Rainbow Flag Award
LGBTQ+ a Gwobr Baner yr Enfys

In September 2022 Ysgol Eirias enrolled on The Rainbow Flag Award. The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework for schools and colleges. The award focuses on positive LGBTQ+ inclusion and visibility through a whole organisation approach, as well as developing strategies that effectively challenge and combat LGBTQ+ phobic bullying. The Rainbow Flag Award is a yearlong process of self-assessment and ongoing monitoring and feedback. Participating schools and colleges have access to a variety of training, resources and interventions, helping them to meet set standards in each of the following areas:

Following a very busy first term, including LGBTQ+ focussed training, we are proud to announce that we have passed our first section, 'Skilled Teacher' and received a very complimentary report, stating; "There is an inspiring dedication from the leaders and staff in this school to making a meaningful, real difference for the school body and students!"

We are on our way to passing the remaining sections of the award. So far, we have developed LGBTQ+ inclusive lessons within the curriculum, reviewed the language of key policies, created forums for pupils to voice their opinions and ideas, celebrated LGBT History Month and are currently very busy planning our very first Pride event ‘Read With Pride’ which will take place in June!

Our commitment to the Rainbow Flag Award is a commitment to improve the lives of all the young people that we work with, including those that are LGBTQ+ and those from LGBTQ+ families.

Here at Eirias, we have over one hundred LGBTQ+ books available in our school library.
