Holocaust Survivor talk at Ysgol Eirias

GCSE and A-Level History students were very fortunate to attend a talk provided by holocaust survivor, Henry Schachter recently.

The talk coincided with Holocaust Memorial Day, on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in January 1939, when we remember the estimated 6 million men, women and children killed in the holocaust.

You could have heard a pin drop as Henry recounted his experiences from his time in hiding during World War II. Henry was just a baby when war broke out in 1939 and his parents took him into hiding with a family in Belgium. Henry was then taken in by a local family and tragically, his parents were arrested by the Nazis and taken to Auschwitz.

He was kept in hiding for many months with just comic books for company. Henry's mother later died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and Henry's father survived a death march from Auschwitz to a camp in Germany but did not survive the war. Henry's grandparents and many other friends and family members were also victims of the holocaust.

As a result of some very fortunate circumstances at the end of the war, Henry was reunited with his uncle and extended family in Belgium and later relocated to England, where he now lives in Bournemouth.

We are very grateful to Sharn Ashbridge and the Llandudno Holocaust Memorial Committee for helping to organise this event. A very moving and impactful experience for our students.
