Great British Beach Clean with The Marine Conservation Society

Pupils from Eirias joined forces with The Marine Conservation Society this week to participate in the Great British Beach Clean for September. Ffion Mitchell, Volunteer Community Engagement Manager, led the clean-up with a briefing on the sample area of Colwyn Bay beach to be scoured and the issuing of safety kit and clipboards.

Donned with high visibility jackets sporting the Marine Conservation Society logo, the pupils surveyed an area of Colwyn Bay beach between Porth Eirias and the newly truncated pier.

They were on the lookout for all things synthetic and were recording their findings along the way.

Ffion Mitchell Said it was fantastic to see young people showing an interest in their local community.

When surveying the beach from a distance, it is easy to overlook the small pieces of pollution that get tangled in the seaweed or swept under a pile of sand.

Pupils recorded many pieces of plastic and a whole manner of other items including, an onion, coffee cups, wet wipes, and lots of discarded cigarette ends.

Gathering at the end for a debriefing and some words of encouragement and hope, the pupils left the beach in good spirits; and a touch cleaner.
